Hello everyone! My name is Olaf, I’m 21 years old and come from Alkmaar, the Netherlands. Since the first of February I have been working and living in Lappeenranta. I study interactive mediadesign and have been doing an internship at Seepia Games in Technopolis.

When I arrived here the winter surroundings were quite the shock. In the Netherlands the winters usually don’t last as long, and the days aren’t quite as dark. Getting settled was not hard though, I made friends quite quick and they helped me enjoy the winter like a real Fin. I went to sauna, swam in ice, went to hockey games and fired up the grilli. The lovely and friendly people of Lappeenranta made me feel at home really quick, and the lovely small city centre is warm and welcoming, even in the winter. I live at Karankokatu, so Saimaa is right across the street, this made it fairly easy to escape the city life and go for a run in the winter wonderland of Lappeenranta’s nature.

But this was winter, and it’s springtime now. Lappeenranta and it’s surroundings offer a great deal of outdoor activities. Being a skateboarder, I really enjoyed the skatepark in Huhteniemi. But skateboarding is not something I couldn’t do at home. So my friends took me disc golfing. Now this might not seem like the most adrenaline pumping outdoor sport, but it is really fun and easy enjoy. Lappeenranta offers a variety of disc golfing courses, and I went to all of them! A couple of beginner discs can be bought at the Intersport in Citycentre for about €15, and it’s money well spent. Playing disc golf is a great excuse to be outside and enjoy the nature. Now that the sun doesn’t set as late you can easily go for a golf after work or school, and if you never played disc golf before, seeing yourself get better just makes it more fun.

Since there isn’t as much nature in the Netherlands as here, I really wanted to see how big the forests really are. And I can tell you: they’re big. Way bigger than the forests I’ve seen at home. They’re might be some houses here and there, but that just makes the forests look more homely. Somewhere in those forests is a great opportunity for another great outdoor activity: tree climbing. At Atreenaline Adventure Park you can get that adrenaline rush you didn’t get while playing disc golf. They offer five tracks you can pick to your own liking. Being outside in the springtime sun already gives me a feeling I rarely feel back at home. Smelling the fresh air made me stop and wonder what life would be like with a forest like this in your backyard. Actually hanging in the trees, and sliding the funicular with the sun on my face was the best feeling I got in spring so far.

After all your daytime activities you can hang out in the city, or enjoy the sunset from the beautiful old fortress. And if you’re lucky, you might even see some of the Finnish wildlife!

My favourite disc golf range is located in Sammonlahti, and doesn’t have an opening or closing time. You can go whenever it’s daytime!
